Similar Examples

Since we now have a solid idea, it’s now simpler to narrow down who we need to target and what conventions are embraced. I went on a science fiction website where they labeled the “14 Best Romantic Sci-Fi Movies for this Valentines Day”. Here’s what I found from studying the films that seemed to have similar themes to our story:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Poster
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
(2004-Michael Gondry)
Genres present- love, romance, surrealism, realism, science fiction
Plot- Follows the story of a couple that undergoes a procedure to delete all memories of each other.
Style & Technique- Utilizes documentary- style footage with low-key effects that worked to make the actors seem small in Joel’s earlier memories. In addition, it’s told in non-chronological with imaginative sequences set up inside Joel’s mind.
Marketing- Extensive, covering all types of media in major cities. They promoted the cast, created a website for the company and the film which includes reviews from people that watched it, and created a lot of written ads.
Target audience: Middle-class women ages 16-20

The One I Love PosterThe One I Love
(2014- Charlie McDowell)
Genres present- Drama, Romance, Fantasy, Science Fiction
Plot- A couple who’s marriage is failing decided to undergo a surreal experience at a weekend getaway, recommend by their therapist.
Style & Technique- Set-up is reminiscent of Hitchcock’s films, unfolds with a sense inevitability followed by odd events that lead up to a plot twist. It also includes references of ’The Twilight Zone”.
Marketing- Markers and publicist combined the ideas of the plot twist and spoilers to incentivize the audience to come watch. Attempted to draw in moviegoers by creating a sense of mystery along while showing references of the Psycho campaign with their “no now will be admitted once the film has begun” disclaimer.
Target audience: Mostly middle class women ages 18-30

Never Let Me Go PosterNever Let Me Go
(2010- Mark Romanek)
Genres present- Drama, Thriller, Romance, Science Fiction
Plot- This movie is about friends that live in a traditional boarding school in the English countryside. The story follows the from early childhood to when they are old and find out their shocking purpose inside the world they live.
Style and Technique- Heavy use of voice over narration to offer insight to the character’s minds. Very somber score that helps create the dramatic tonality.
Marketing- Since this movie is based off a book, most of their advertisements created a references stating that it was based on a “Best-selling novel”
Target Audience: Women ages 18-30

Based on this information, it is abundantly clear that women in their late teens and early twenties will most likely be the target audience for our story. In addition, this information has provided us with alternative examples of which could be the best method to advertise our film. When our defined script is written, it will be easier to determine what stereotypes we would want to embrace, similar to the ones adapted by these films. STAY TUNNED!
