Casting Call... For Characters

So today in class Sofi and I tried to write our script but we noticed one key component was missing... WE STILL DON’T HAVE OUR CHARACTERS! Based on our discussion here’s what we came up with.

Simon is our male protagonist whose point of view will be used to tell our story. Some adjectives we chose to make up his personality include: stubborn, nerdy, frustrated, and definitely an introvert. We derived a lot of our inspiration from the character Theodore in the movie Her, who embodies the characterization we want to establish. Likewise, his styling is also influencing the wardrobe we might want to create for Simon, involving muted button down shirts and glasses. We also chose to have him be 25 (3 years older than his partner) to demonstrate a greater sense of maturity, especially during the earlier stages of his relationship.

Penelope is a total antithesis of Simon, which supports our assertion that opposites attract. She is outspoken, vivacious, passionate, and controlling which clashes with Simon’s stubbornness. When coming up with this character we thought about how Mary Jane from Spider Man was completely the opposite from Peter Parker, yet they were able to make a good couple. Her personality will also be reflective in her clothing, which will include bright colors and a greater sense of futuristic influence than the retro style worn by Simon. In addition, we decided she will be 22 years old right now, but a junior in high school when she met Simon.

Part of our montage of memories will include a scene from when they met, which will hold a very significant effect on several developments of our story. This scene is set in a nearby park, six years prior to where they are now. Simon was reading his book when percisely at 10:43 am, Penelope sat next to him on the bench and started a conversation. Because of this event, the time for the simulation will be set at 10:43 am representing the most significant and impactful time for both of their lives. We also decided that when Simon finally finds Penelope in the simulation, she will be sitting in that same park bench, just like before.

The rest of our characters will be frozen extras, with the exception of the psychologist. For him, we decided to stick with the stereotype of a white, old man wearing a vintage suit and glasses to make It abundantly clear that he’s their therapist.

For our actors, Sofi is going to try to ask some of her college friends that are around the same age of our characters. However if we can’t find then, we’ll probably ask some kids from our school’s drama department to see if they would help us out. Hopefully this works out either way!
